MLK Public Library
I tried to go to the National Gallery today but they wouldn't let me check my laptop and insisted that I carry it around me with while walking through the museum. I booed them and decided to check out the Gallery another day. Instead, I wandered around the Federal Triangle for awhile until I found a cheesy souvenir store and on a whim I asked them where the DC public library was. What luck! I was about three streets away. Now I'm sitting at one of the tables enjoying the sweet, sweet wireless.
Safeway is on the agenda for tonight because I am so sad when I go into the kitchen and see my pathetic cache of food. I need oatmeal, good tea, eggs, cheese, and maybe some pudding if I am feeling up to it.
This girl from Australia named Louisa is staying in the same room with me and she followed me down to the Metro and we marveled together at how clean and quiet the station was. She then received an additional bonus when we got outside and it was snowing. Apparently, Australia is not known for its blizzardy winters. When I see snow now all I think is, "well, it's below thirty-two degrees. Lame."
We stopped by the Visitor's Center at the Ronald Reagan building and had to not only put our belonging through an x-ray scanner but also present ID. Intense! There was this lady there that kept pushing this insect show on us and was like, you can hold a cockroach! Sorry, but I only hold cockroaches when Travis is around to take a picture so I can show everyone how brave I am.See! See!
I haven't really pimped out Travis' site yet because he doesn't need the attention but a lot of the stuff that I do I don't write about and he does. So check it out.
We're going to see Cloverfield on Wednesday night because he scored supercool press tickets. I don't really care about this movie and probably wouldn't have even watched on DVD unless I heard awesome things about it, but I am really excited now not only because the tickets are free (and free is good) but also because I get to see it two days before everyone else. If it's great, I'll be like, "ooooh people are going to love it!", and if it's awful, I'll be like, "oooooh people are so looking forward to this movie and it's going to be ruined for them!"
I made a cool unexpected stop today but don't want to talk about it because the pictures tell so much more.
Overall, even with the cold and not having a job yet and feeling like a lazy bum, I am enjoying my stay down here. The bunk bed situation kind of saddens me but then I pretend like I'm at a summer camp or something because people would pay for those kind of lodgings. Let's do another good things/bad things list about my hostel, because I love lists.
Good things:
1. It's free lodging, for now.
2. There's a kitchen with a fridge and oven and microwave.
3. It's warm enough.
4. The neighborhood is really cool.
5. There's a Safeway five minutes away.
6. My roommates are nice.
7. Steve the manager is nice.
8. I get to meet a lot of international people. Especially the British. Talk to me, sweet Brit boys.
9. The shower is fantastic and pretty.
10. I can use the dresser in the hall to hold my clothes so they won't get crazy wrinkled.
Lame-ish things:
1. I don't really have established residency yet so I can't get a library card. Mom, send me some mail. Anything. Family Circus. A good coupon.
2. It's sort of a walk to the Metro Station.
3. Even if I do get to know people at the hostel, they'll be gone on average two nights later.
4. I don't have a job yet.
5. I try to make myself scarce during the day because I don't want to linger at the hostel so I inevitably end up walking for miles and miles and I get really tired.
Ugh, this guy sitting across from me is reading some weightlifting book and keeps putting it down and leaning back to sleep. That would be find but he is making mucusy snoring noises and grossing me out.
