Field Trip

Remember yesterday when I was all like, can't tell you where I went without pictures! Well, the pictures are here now. And they're awesome.

I had just left the souvenir shop with my head full of directions to the MLK library. Right when I was about to cross the street, I happened to look to my left, and I saw...

THE HOUSE WHERE LINCOLN DIED! And it was free! How could anyone keep walking?

There was one lonely-looking docent waiting by the stairs and another visitor, but that was it. Here is the parlour room. The sign says, "Between visits to her husband's bedside, Mary Lincoln waited in this parlour with her son Robert and friends of the Lincoln family."

This one said "In this bedroom, Secretary of War Stanton held several cabinet meetings, interviewed witnesses, and ordered the pursuit of the assassin."

Finally ... here it is! The bed! Well, the docent admitted that this wasn't actually the bed, because some people in Chicago bought the original and won't give it back. But it's a faithful replica.

"President Lincoln died in the room at 7:22 AM on April 15, 1865."

This one has a lot of text. The photograph on the right was taken by someone who was boarding in the house at the time.

Also, pretty flowers!

I love some of the signs here. One of the other classics: "Clothes Encounters of a Second Kind" - a consignment shop.

Thankfully, I managed to find my local friendly Scientology center. I was looking all day for that.
