The one outstanding feature of today so far was that I had to get up at 6:45 to do a check-in at 8:00. This check-in was identical to the ones that preceded it; I didn't have to talk to anyone and got a large portion of my book done. After that strenuous workout, I went to the library to pick up my materials as well as to do a tiny bit of revision on the subject of Spanish, because I was afraid that the lady that was to hire me might throw an impromptu oral challenge on the table and I'd just have to leave in disgrace.
Somehow I managed to check out the most bizarre, twisted book ever; it was called Spanish Memory Book which I thought would work well since I have no memory of Spanish. The entire thing is made up of two-liner mnemonics to help you remember both the Spanish word as well as its definition. However, their poetry leaves something to be desired. Several examples:
abrazo: hug, embrace
A bra so snug
Invites a hug.
Get it? A-bra-so? Abrazo? Cleverness.
temblar: to shake, shiver, shudder, tremble
Don't aim blarney at my dear old nanny,
She'll shake with laughter; she's both couth and canny.
sujeto: person, subject
What makes Sue hate old gentlemen so much?
Some person used to beat her with a crutch.
These poetic jewels seem like something I would make up when I was eight. This one seems like truth:
pelo: hair
You pay low prices for your hair,
And that is why the people stare.
Wow. I could read those for hours. They seem like the most unhelpful sentences ever created.
Anyways, they were completely unnecessary since a very, very cheerful woman shoved a packet of forms at me to fill out and told me how happy she was to have someone since they had absolutely no Spanish tutors for the summer. So basically they are relying completely on me. How is it that they could find no one else? It's a sad, sad state of affairs.
She gave my transcript a cursory glance and also added me to the tutor list for French, Latin, Italian, and biology. I pity the fool that comes to me for Italian tutoring.
